“You are fierce, you are amazing, you are going to get your man,” Daria pep-talked me as she and Princess Alice half carried me into the elevator.

I would have had a hard time walking in heels on a normal day. Now I was worried about dropping the clutch, keeping my boobs from falling down, and making sure I wasn’t flashing anyone through the slit on my dress. Not to mention that Princess Alice had insisted that I wear my hair down, and it was in my mouth.

“Think sexy thoughts,” Daria whispered as we waited for the elevator.

I blinked rapidly. I rarely wore makeup, but Princess Alice had insisted on mascara, and now it felt like something was poking under my eyelid. My eyes were watering. I reached up to rub my face, and I dropped my clutch. I adjusted my cape and reached down to grab it.

“Uh…” Daria said. “I think you need to not bend down like that.”

“Or at all, dear,” Princess Alice said. She and Daria eyed me critically while I tugged at the hem of the dress.

“You should take off your underwear,” Daria said finally.

“I can’t take off my underwear,” I shriek-whispered.

“You see it. It’s bright pink when you bend over.”

“I’m not going to bend over.”

“You’re going to sit,” Princess Alice reminded me, “and the whole restaurant is going to see the gift Mike bought you.”

“I need to wear underwear.”

“You don’t,” Daria said, trying to yank it down.

“We are too close.” I yanked my undies back up.

“I just attached your boobs to your body with double-sided sticky tape,” my friend hissed. “I’m committed.”

I looked around furtively then yanked off my undies, stuffed them into the tiny clutch, and snapped it closed just as the elevator arrived.

“Your gentleman caller is waiting downstairs, Phoebe,” Horace informed me, tipping his hat to Princess Alice.

“Remember,” she instructed me as we rode the elevator down. “You must be charming and interesting. Tell funny anecdotes, not full stories. He has an enormous ego; let him talk about himself. And don’t cross your legs,” she added. “Do the duchess slant.”

My head spun as I tried to make mental notes. But all the wisdom flew out of my brain when the elevator doors opened to Mike standing in the lobby, talking to his brother Crawford.

He turned and gave me a look like he wanted to rip me out of my dress.

Fierce. I am fierce. I am not bending over or crossing my legs, but I am fierce.

Unfortunately, while I could probably stand in one spot and look fierce, I didn’t have it in me to walk and look fierce.

“Don’t shuffle,” Daria whispered as I took one tottering step out of the elevator.

“Heel, toe. Heel, toe,” Princess Alice reminded me.

Heel, toe.

I kicked and walked. As I moved through the lobby, I felt every breeze waft under the skirt.

I really need to put my underwear back on. What if Mike sticks his hand under there and finds out I’m not wearing any?

That thought made me wet, which, since I was not wearing any underwear, was not good.
